The Caribbean Experience – From a Fan

We are glad to present a piece of Caribbean musing by one of our customers and cricket fans who went to the Caribbean to take home the ‘CPL T 20 blues’.

Here’s a verbatim perspective of the Caribbean experience as narrated by a true cricket fan –

The league started with a blistering Gayle storm and since then CPL T 20 has been a cricketing marvel. We’ve gotten to see some clean hitting and some smart bowling from a bunch of very active cricketers. With Trinidad and Tobago on top followed by Jamaica, there may be a lot more storms to come. T & T are clearly the favorites to win the league. The build up to the finals in mid August seems to be fantastic and fans have been getting their money’s worth.

While Tino Best has been a topic of controversy, some other cricketers have had a ball both off-field and on-field. New Zealand team mates Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori have been among the active few who set out to make the most of their stay in the Caribbean. You would find players interacting with the locals and even hitting a ball or two out in the deep blue sea. While kids struggled to hit Vettori out in the sea, Ross Taylor showcased his skills with probably a few lost balls out on the beaches.

The best part about being a cricket fan in the Caribbean is that you can simply bump into cricketers out on the beaches. A select few beaches seem obsessed with the game and as much fun it is to play in the sand, watching the game is a unique experience that comes only in the Caribbean. Unlike a few countries where the players are kept hidden for security reasons, West Indies has a fresh sense of jest and it is a treat to see the players entertain the crowd.

As a cricket fan, you have a lot to take home and as a tourist you have even more to take home. While West Indian cricket is still to revive itself, the prospects seem glamorous. The new kids have shown sufficient talent and skills for them to be a part of the international side in the future. The sprints and the dances on the field are simply a testimony to the fact that West Indians continue to enjoy their cricket and will continue to do so. Off the field, it is a charm to be in the country. Music fills the air and the Calypso beats hit your ears to brew a perfect evening on the beach. The people you meet and the food you eat – it is all summed up in a single expression – ambrosial.
